Jill Scott was born on April 4, 1972, in Philadelphia Pennsylvania to her mother Joyce Scott. Her mother was her maternal grandmother, and was raised as an only child. Scott graduated from her school, the Philadelphia High School for Girls. After that, she attended Temple University. While working two jobs as a teacher, she was studying secondary education. She wanted to be a high-school English teacher. Her dream to become an English teacher in high school was shattered when she dropped out of high school. Following her first gigs doing live poetry shows, she eventually teamed up Amir Quest Thompson of The Roots. The two ended up working together in writing You Got Me. During a Roots concert, she made her debut to be an artist. Later, she secured collaborations artists like Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. She also gained knowledge of the stage when she appeared in the Canada tour of Broadway show Rent. Also, she was the first signing agent for Hidden Beach Recordings.
